Cracked skin

What causes cracked skin?

When the skin is damaged and lacks enough water, small splits and cracks may appear across the skin surface. Such condition is commonly called cracked skin.

Skin of the hands is constantly exposed to different environmental factors which can cause it to dry and crack.

Especially in the winter months, due to cold air, wind and contact with snow skin is prone to get damaged which can lead to cracks.

Frequent washing of the hands with hot water, aggressive soaps and coming in contact with detergents may damage the epidermis and cause cracks to appear.

How does the skin become cracked?

Cracks happen as the skin deeply dries, leading to extreme loss of moisture, roughening of the skin’s surface, loss of elasticity and ultimately cracking when stretched.

Lack of moisture leads to damage in skin cells which are itself responsible for maintaining the appropriate water balance. The situation spirals. Severe dryness causes shrinking, tensing and inflammation of the skin making it more sensitive, rough to the touch, wrinkly and eventually very dry and prone to cracks. Cracks appear mostly when the skin lost its elastic quality and can no longer stretch naturally.

Some parts of the body are more prone to skin cracking than others, for example around the joints the skin is tenser and can crack more easily. Stretching of the skin in such dry areas leads to skin damage and cracks, skin redness and even bleeding and flaking off.

How to care for cracked skin?

For your daily hand care routine it is recommended to use pH-neutral soaps, mildly warm water and frequent use of moisturizing hand cream or lotion.

You will need to treat the hands with a cream that intensely moisturizes, nourishes and soothes the skin.

If your skin is extremely dehydrated and cracked, you will need to do more than just nourish it with cream throughout the day. It is recommended to also go for a night treatment – apply a thick layer of rich moisturizing cream on the hands before bed time and wear soft cotton gloves (can also use socks). Warmth will help ensure that nourishing substances from the cream penetrate deep into the skin. As you wake you will have already noticed that your hands became much more tender and soft.

MIRATI Hand Cream is a combination of organic Ghee butter, organic Aloe Vera and orange essential oil for excellent hydration and protection of your skin . It is designed to shelter your hands against elements of weather, soaps, detergents and other external factors which may cause the skin to crack. Cream’s great texture ensures quick absorption while further moisturizing, nourishing and sustaining the skin.
