Rough skin of the heel
Reasons for rough skin on the heel.
Rough skin of the feet, usually present on the heels, is very common.
Skin becomes rough because of the physical stress to the foot, construction of certain shoes, weight, deformation of the legs or feet, stand-up work, poor nutrition, athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), psoaris, as well as may be inherited, be caused by poor functioning of sweat glands, flat feet, thyroid issues or diabetes. It can be the result of skin dehydration, as skin on the feet does not produce fat. Women often face hardened skin on the heel because of wearing of nylon stockings which do not allow the skin of the foot to ‘breath’.
Characteristics of dry skin on the heel.
Skin on the heels can become dry, crack, get burning rashes, become thick and rough, flake and itch – all of which may cause problem with wearing shoes and experience pain while walking. Skin outside of such blisters may change color to yellow, blacken or get red spots. Hardened skin on the heels is essentially body’s natural response against external environment and prevention of further damage to the foot tissue.
Non-frequent removal of hard skin tissue on the heel can cause it to completely dry and crack leading to wounds and infections.
How to care for the hard skin on the heel?
Doctors mostly agree that the lead cause for the hard heel skin is improper foot wear. Worn out soles, shoes which are too tight and shoes without any air-flow cause additional stress to the heel prompting layers of skin to harden. It is important to select the right foot wear that is proper to your feet, comfortable, breathing and from proper materials.
Key step to healthy and soft feet is daily use of nurturing and moisturizing cream. Ideal foot care consists of first softening feet by bathing followed by removing of hardened tissue and frequent use of nourishing cosmetics.
Peeling is always welcomed. There is a lot of goodies available for removal of hardened tissue on the feet, but one has to be careful not to remove excess amount of skin as this may cause new blisters or bleeding.
After soaking the feet in warm water and removing the thickened skin, dry the feet and apply the cream or lotion. Skin will absorb the cosmetics better if after application the feet are placed in cotton socks.
